The Year In Books 2014

I am a reader. I have always enjoyed reading. Sometimes I read and read and read. Other times I don't read anything other than a magazine or a seed catalogue. It doesn't make the love of a good read any less.

I belong to a book group, which I can thoroughly recommend to anyone wishing to either start one or join one. I have read some cracking novels that I may not have chosen for myself, because of book group. I have fallen in love with the novels of Maggie O'Farrell thanks to book group. I have read some howlers too, but that's okay. The food is always good at book group, and the people I have met through it are just the best bunch of ladies.

When I read this post by Laura, I wanted in. The idea of an on line reading group really appeals. It will motivate me to read the current backlog on my bookcase, and I can maybe get some recommendations from others.

This is my read for January:

I've already started it, and am hooked. Why don't you join in too? Follow the link and sign up!

  3. I've heard really good things about this book. I read her book The Little Friend years ago and enjoyed it. I will have to see if our library has it, though I am sure the waiting list will be long.

  4. I am going to join in I think (if I can figure out how to). I love my books (paper and audio) and always have a couple on the go, different books for different moods. You are right, book groups are most enjoyable, for the chat, for the laughter, for the books I would otherwise not read and for making friends. Cx

  5. Thanks so much for joining in! There are a few people reading The Goldfinch, and it's definitely on my to-read list, so I look forward to hearing what you think of it.

  6. Hi Laura! I'm joining in - and am also a fan of Maggie O'Farrell. My favourite was The Vanishing of Esme Lennox (so far)... recently finished Instructions for a Heatwave too.
    Here's to a literary 2014!

  7. I love reading too, but I'm not sure I'd have time to read enough for a book club. I'm on the lookout for a knitting club though. Sometimes I take my knitting when I meet my friends for coffee, but it's not quite the same when I'm the only one. I need more knitters! Hope you enjoy The Goldfinch, it's a book I've looked at, so I'll be interested to see what you think of it.

  9. I really should read more, I know I should. Our book group is fun but it's blatantly a wine group now, which is kind of a shame in some ways. I hope you enjoy this book - I read her first two novels and thought they were excellent, and heard this adapted on radio 4. x

  10. Isn't it wonderful? I have to force myself to put it down, way too late at night. I can feel how devastated I will be when it's finished. First time I've been glad of such a humungous book!

  11. I'm looking forward to reading this sometime this year. I loved her previous two books. It'll be interesting to see what you and others think about it as I've read quite mixed reviews, Emma xx

  12. I've just started The Goldfinch too - it's brilliant isn't it? I'm only about 100 pages in - I want to spend all my time reading it! I'm a big Maggie O'Farrell fan too - I have yet to read one of hers I don't like.
