The Best Medicine

All alright are we?

Truthfully, right now I could really do with someone to cheer me up. What I'd really like is to curl up on the sofa with a mug of tea, and have a proper laugh with someone. Laughing is one of the best things ever, and yet I don't seem to do it enough. There's not been many laughs around here lately, for one reason and another. It gets like that sometimes, don't you think? Life can wear you down to a nub. I felt it physically pushing my head to the ground this past week. And the world seems like a dreadful place at the moment. I'm ashamed to be human these days. I'm waiting for Planet Earth II, so that my faith can restored by the beautiful creatures that live here too. I'm longing for David's soothing tones, as he tells me about the whale, the spider, the monkey and the gnat. I'll sit and watch with open mouthed awe at things I will never see face to face. It will put a smile on my face for sure.

But the laugh. It's the laugh that I want. A proper belly laugh. A real tears streaming down your face chortle. A 'remember when' giggle. A rally of sniggers. A loud, raucous guffaw. An aching of the cheeks, as I cry 'no more!'

Tell me, when was the last time that you had one of those laughs?

Leanne xx

  1. We recently signed up for Netflix (more for E at uni actually) and I watched 'What we did on our holiday' last week. If you haven't seen it, it's a lovely film starring David Tennant and Billy Connelly and there was a scene in it that had be laughing and gasping for breath. It really is the best medicine. I hope you feel better and have that belly laugh moment soon. xx

  2. Those belly laughs are priceless. I had it a couple of weekends ago when 5 of us were travelling in a car from Guildford to Lynmouth for a race. One poor chap, 4 girls. But the double entendres were legendary. I never knew that protein balls could so knicker wettingly fuuny! Nuff said. Really hope you find those laughs, they are better than medicine. I'm coming your way next week. Do hope I can snap photos as lovely as yours xx

  3. There are definitely times when everything seems to get you down and you're right, a proper laugh can pick you right up again. Mick makes me laugh all the time, he's got a dry sense of humour but I find it so funny and once I start I can't stop.

  4. I was reading Scriptor Senox's blog on forgetfulness and someone left a reply that had me laughing outloud, This is exactly how it goes. Thus the "joke" prayer, G-d, grant me the senility to forget the people i never liked anyway, the good fortune to run into the ones i do, and the eyesight to tell the difference!

  6. I've felt since I was a little girl - 8 or 9 years old - that the only way for me to stop feeling sad or anxious is to have a good, hard laugh. It always helps me feel better about handling whatever I need to. I hope you're feeling better soon, leanne. Take care.

  7. Leanne you would have had the biggest belly laugh if you could have seen me yesterday as I approached a near vertical slope downwards . My face must have been a picture. Is that a path , really? I'm expected to go down there to carry on my walk. To quote a famous tennis player ' Are you serious'. I then went into mutiny mode and refused to budge for a few minutes. Your best laugh would then have been watching me try to go down. I almost succumbed to going down on my bum. But that wouldn't have been lady like...hopefully you are laughing now, because my husband was wetting himself as he watched from the bottom...smuggly! Keep smiling there is always something to laugh about. Hugs B xxx

  9. Back when I used to work in a casino, one evening the chef had been chopping chillies. He needed to loo, and didn't wash his hands properly before he went. You can see where I'm going with this. It all swelled up! The casino manager, who was a raving queen, was banging on the door going, "Let me in, I can help" in a terribly camp way. To cut a long story short, the chef had to go to hospital where a nice nurse put some ointment on it to make it all better. Although I'm sure that wasn't the last time I was on the floor laughing. Next time I'll tell you about the nudist camp I accidentally stayed at... CJ xx

  11. I think we could all do with a cup of tea and some time with a good friend. Sometimes it is all we need to feel like our axis has been corrected and we are back on track. I hope you feel better, life has its down but then things will level out and resume at a normal pace before you know it.

  13. I laughed so hard at work the other night at something so silly, I couldnt stop for ages and I couldnt explain to anyone what had been so funny. I realised that I hadnt laughed like that for ages, it felt so good. I miss those laughs I had with friends at school. Must make effort to laugh more!

  14. Go on a bumper car, I laughed out loud for the first time in ages at Dingles Vintage Fairground. You get to act like a child - it's the best stress reliever ever. Take care, x

  15. An evening out with your girlfriends is always good for lifting your spirits when you are feeling low. Nothing better than a good girlie giggle! Also bouncing on the trampoline really gives me the giggles..the pure, simple childish joy is wonderful :)

  16. Last weekend at our Samba Band party, there was the most ridiculous dancing, each trying to out do the other with their crazy antics including Monty Pythonesk silly walks.....hilarious. I'm smiling as I think about it.

  17. Feel a bit low too Leanne -always do when the light starts to go at this time of year. Last time I couldn't stop laughing was at myself when I managed to dabble the dangly bit of an oversized jumper my cool friend had persuaded me to buy in my mug of tea. This was in front of a class of teenagers who were laughing too....

  18. We all watched 'Groundhog Day' together the other evening and had a good belly laugh when Bill Murray punches the insurance sales guy. (That sounds awful but if you know the film, you'll know what I mean.) Also laughing with my children rather hysterically on our mammoth walks this week - it's the only way to get through. Hope you've found something to laugh about since writing. I'm looking forward to Planet Earth II, too. S xx

  19. Hi I've just found your lovely blog and had to respond to this. I went to see Bridget Jone's Baby last week and honestly there were moments where I was shaking with laughter especially the scenes with Emma Thompson. Go see if you haven't already.

  20. A bit late with this - sorry! My friends and I have reached 'the mammogram age', and were comparing notes about the experience! We howled with laughter and there were even actions involved 😳 to add to the descriptions. I actually work in the breast clinic but there's nothing to beat hands-on experience..!

  21. I know exactly what you mean. We have quite a boozy and raucous PTA and I've had some good belly laughs with them recently, but I will be honest and say that I miss my Leeds friends hugely, for the belly laughs and lots of other things too. My colleagues make me laugh quite a lot too actually, I forgot about that. But a good laugh can shake off anxiety and lift a mood like nothing else. I hope you get some good laughs soon. Any good comedy gigs in St Ives....? xx
