Godrevy Lighthouse

I can see Godrevy Lighthouse from Sam's bedroom window. Every morning I wander into his room, and I stand for a moment - sometimes longer - to stare across the bay towards the lighthouse. I may go back to that window several times during the day. Just to check on her. She is a beautiful and permanent man made fixture on my horizon, and depending on the weather is either dazzling white or a soft grey outline.

I have taken countless photographs of her over the years. From close up and from far away. She calls to me. I always stop and look at her when I'm out walking the dogs. I sometimes can't quite believe that I live somewhere that has proximity to a lighthouse. I quite often have to pinch myself that I live here at all. She is a beacon of safety. She is a famous landmark. She is reputably the inspiration for a Virginia Woolf novel. According to Olly, she is where Granny lives. She is a beauty.

  1. What a fabulous view, Leanne. I would take lots of photos too if I lived near it. There is something very tranquil and calming in these photos. :)

  4. Hi Leanne. And, is granny living there? That would be ever so cool :) but not very practical for her messages I guess. It is rather beautiful and I would probably spend a good while watching her, too. Lovely. Christina xx

    1. I just realise that you may not be familiar with the Scots way of saying "going to the shops", which is "doing the messages". xx

    2. I love that expression, Christina! Granny sort of lives there. We scattered her ashes on the headland that overlooks Godrevy. Pops was only 18mths old, but we always wave and say hello to her.

  6. Beautiful photos, leanne. I love having something that I can look at daily too. In my case, it's the mountain and in the evening, I watch the tram cars sliding up and down its face. I would love to spend a little while in my life at some point looking out at the sea and a lighthouse.

  9. Just catching up on your last couple of posts. You do make me long to see the sea again. The proper sea not the barely more than estuary beaches that are closest to me. I always thought I would live within sight of the ocean but it didn't work out that way. Give the waves a wave from me !

  11. I know exactly what you mean about the draw of Godrevy light house! When we stayed at Gwithian it kept drawing me back to the sea. How lucky to be able to see it from the house. Your pictures are wonderful and the last ones almost looks like a painting. I have got Virginita Woolf's novel waiting here for our trip to St Ives. If you want to meet up please email me at barky66@hotmail.co.uk. Sarah x

  12. I love lighthouses! What an amazing place you live in, Leanne. I can see why you would stop and look out the window at it each day. If it was me I think I'd be tempted to trade rooms with Sam!

  15. What gorgeous, gorgeous photos. I love to see the same landmark during different seasons and weathers. I don't have anything in Leeds with that kind of meaning, but I get how it makes you feel.

Is it far from Gwithian? Would I be able to visit when we come on our hols do you think? x

  16. Gillian it's spitting distance from Gwithian. You'll be able to visit her for sure. The children will love the beach and going to seal spot. And there is a lovely cliff walk from there to Hells Mouth. Loads of nature. Spectacular views and a great cafe at the end!!xx
