My Fledgling Garden

It's been wet. Really wet. Wet and windy. But mild. The plants are pushing up through the soil, unfurling their leaves and there are flowers too. Only a few, but exciting nonetheless. The Anemones have self seeded in the grass, which I'm thrilled about. The staging in the greenhouse is about to collapse. It was given to me by a neighbour, but I think I may have to invest in some new ones. I have more seed to sow, and February through to March is the time to get it started under glass. The sweet peas are going well, as are the Snap Dragons. They are teeny tiny now. Hopefully they will be strong plants for the garden in a couple of months. I hope to grow a sweet pea screen this summer, and I have chosen heritage varieties which will pump out scent and provide me with loads of bedside posies.

Strawberry & Nasturtium

Rose

Sedum
My seeds have arrived from Sarah Raven and Chiltern Seeds and I'm eager to get sowing them too. I need to buy compost for the raised vegetable beds. All this wet weather has washed away a lot of soil. I'm going to try the no dig method, and let the worms do the work for me. I'm thrilled that the Blueberry bushes have sprung back to life. They were scorched by last year's heatwave, and I didn't get any fruit. Fingers crossed for this year.

Camellia

Tulip, Daffodil, Hyacinth, Anemone, Iris

Pixie Lupin
If I get a chance I will be pruning the Buddleia and Red Robin this week. It's the right time of year for it, and it keeps them tidy and healthy. I say prune, but hack is probably a better choice of word. There are many complicated tutorials on pruning, but what I do seems to work so.....

Sweet Pea

It's all coming along nicely.

  2. Gosh, it's really heartening to see shoots coming up. I'm going to try growing sweet peas and snap dragons for the first time this year as they are real favourites, and I've been inspired by Sarah Raven's catalogue too - she really takes the fear out of gardening for the first timer! Can't wait to see how your garden blooms x

  3. That camellia is beautiful Leanne, so perfect, and in such abysmal weather. I have a rose that is at a similar stage, but no signs of life on my blueberries yet. It's a good time of year for dreaming about what it will all look like in a few months. Hope you are staying dry, and have a good weekend. CJ xx

  7. So much lovely promise in your garden - anemones will look so lovely in the grass. Your blueberry bush is looking good too - I think mine is still hibernating! You've reminded me that I need to get my sweet peas sown too, thank you! Looking forward to seeing some pics of all these lovely flowers x

  8. I know I have said it before, but I am loving the new blog look!! I really need to spend time on mine and I just wish I could pay someone to do it. I love these posts and there is so much going on in your garden. I must confess that last year I was much more geared up than I am this year, maybe because I know that we are going away for a few weeks and it will mean loosing all my seedlings again like last year, so not to sure how to go about it all this year. I am also a little behind in the garden maintenance as I am still to prune my roses, is this too late???? Btw have you received my email, just want to check it got got you ok desire a little late??? Looking forward to many more of these lovely post this year. Enjoy your weekend xoxo

  10. I have honestly not set foot in my garden since November, apart from walking to the washing line or garage. But I can see there are primulas and bulbs coming up. You are good at planning. I forget I've got a garden until Spring comes, then I start buying compost etc. x
