Tea and cake served daily

Why is it when I decide to go back to dieting (which I hate with every fibre of my being), I bombard the family with sweet treats. Today I made lemon drizzle cake, chocolate chip cookies and two apple and blackberry crumbles. I distributed the cake to various family members, the cookies were devoured by the boys before tea, and one crumble was eaten for pudding.

I enjoy baking. I turn into a 1950's housewife - pinny goes on, radio 4 in the background, cup of tea by my side. I love the feeling I get from producing something home made. I get a huge kick when the children come home from school to goodies in the kitchen. I guess I am a traditionalist at heart.

Baking is one of those things that you can share with your children from a really young age. I don't often have the patience for messy play and I hate the smell of playdough. And yet I don't seem to mind a kitchen wasteland of flour, hundreds and thousands and my boy poking his grubby fingers into cake mixture......Olly was still tired from yesterday's outing, which gave me the excuse to bake in the first place!

My Mondays are usually spent clearing up after the weekend, preparing the Sunday Roast (which we have on a Monday for several reasons) and general pottering and playing activities. I like Monday's. I like its' routine. I like that it is just Olly and me left to our own devices. I love that even the most mundane task - loading the washing machine for example - becomes a fun game. I love snuggling up with him on the sofa in the playroom. I know that these days are already numbered for Olly and me I'm making the most of them.

I made 25 of these. Samuel ate 23 of them.

One for now, one for later
