for the love of kernow

I've yet to watch Poldark. I keep meaning to, but instead me and Sam are obsessed with Unbreakable Kimmy Schmitt. It is ridculous, and we have roared about laughing. However, my sister in law has kept me informed about Ross Poldark and the gang. She tells me she enjoys it for the dramatic plot lines, and the beautiful cinematography that encapsulates the majestic landscape of Cornwall. I suspect it's Aidan Turner stripped to the waist in a field that's piqued her interest.

I'm lucky. I can stomp around Poldark country any day of the week. And if I squint, I can almost convince myself that Marc is a dead ringer for Ross. And if he squints in return I am the image of Demelza. We squint a lot at each other as you can imagine. I am surrounded by majestic landscape, so there's no need to squint at that. This weekend we went to Botallack. It was stunning. The coconut smell of the gorse was intoxicating. There were sweeps of wild flowers, and wildlife in abundance. Honestly I have to pinch myself sometimes that I wound up living here.

In other news, I've just tested Sam for his English Language A Level. Specifically on language terms. I'm so glad I'm not studying it. Studying is hard. It requires commitment and motivation. It's taken me three years to choose and buy a new sign for the house. And actually I haven't even bought it yet. Don't tell Marc. He'll stop squinting, and the game will be up.

Also Olly has declared his intention of being a builder when he grows up. He tells me that he would like to build me a new house. So that he can live in this one. It won't have any stairs, but it will have a slide. I like the sound of that.

And one last thing; I have thirteen Breton t-shirts. Is that quite normal?

See you dreckley my 'andsome.

Leanne xx

  1. Hi Leanne. I didn't know gorse smells like coconut, how intriguing. A house with a slide is such a good idea, much more fun than stair lifts I imagine. Hope Olly has also got plans for a way up? Escalator maybe? Sam once said he was going to buy us a mobile home so he could live in our house. Prince charming. Enjoy the amazing spring my friend. Christina xxx

  2. Leanne, you have absolutely outdone yourself with these photos, they're stunning. It makes me long to visit beautiful Cornwall again. A house with a slide is a top plan. I'm surprised there aren't more about actually. Thirteen Breton shirts is almost compulsory if you live by the sea I think. Although if you want to keep the Demelza thing alive you should also invest in one or two plunging, nipped in, lace trimmed, full length things for running across cliff tops in. CJ xx

  3. Beautiful photos! Are they actually of the mine used in the Poldark series? They look very similar but of course the ones on the programme are probably a set. I wasn't going to watch it but I've really enjoyed it so it might be worth a look one day. Plus Aidan Turner stripped to the waist isn't a bad thing to see on a Sunday evening :-) xx

  4. I love these photos. Oh, I want to go there and see it in person someday. I haven't watched Poldark but I *have* watched Kimmy Schmidt and I thought it was bizarre and hilarious. I feel bad laughing because the whole idea is so dark (the cult, being imprisoned, etc.) but I do anyway. I don't have any Breton shirts but I wish I did. I think it's a nice look.

  6. How utterly gorgeous! Awesome photos Leanne. Poldark has only just premiered here this month, the ABC is certainly enjoying a spike in ratings thanks to Mr Turner! x

  7. So, so beautiful you lucky girl. I haven't been watching Poldark either, but I hear good things about it so may try and catch up at some point. I also loved the idea of all that squinting going on - I think it's one of the few blessings of eyesight deteriorating with age! Have a great week. x

  8. I wouldn't bother with TV if I lived in Cornwall. One of our all time favourite holidays is when we've stayed at the Landmark houses at Lower Porthmeor, a couple of miles west of Zennor, which are surrounded by the tin mine workings and with a beautiful walk down to a quiet beach with big boulders at high tide and sand at low tide and curious seals that come to say hello. Once we walked to St Ives from the house, about 8 miles I think along the coastal path, and our children being young teenagers and on their way to the metropolis that is St Ives refused to wear their walking boots. I'm sure you can imagine the state of their converse trainers when we arrived. We caught the bus back. We had a TV-free night last night, instead I sat watching the most beautiful crescent-shaped moon in the darkening sky.

  9. Brilliant post. Maybe living there the Poldark appeal isn't quite the same. Apart from anything else the filming is beautifully done, very classy! I am a fan though. Turns out there is a house near here where they film the location for Trenwith which is Poldark family home, so I think I might have to go and visit. I love the Cornish pictures and funny snippets of family life. X

  10. Ross Poldark stripped to the waist scything in wild, windswept Cornwall does it for me. I have been making M garden topless ever since. Not sure planting carrots in the home counties is quite the same thing, but never mind.

GORGEOUS photos lovely girl- I think these might be your best ones yet. Love 'em. Wish I was there in fact.

L always wanted a fireman's pole in his bedroom instead of stairs. We had long conversations about the design. M said it had dual use potential. I have no idea what he meant :o) xx

  12. Having been transfixed with the first series in the mid '70's I was loathe to get caught up with the new one. But, it's much better. However, I have now missed three episodes and have no way of recording programmes. So, I will just have to wait for the DVD to come out. I shall be squinting as well. He is very 'andsome!

  13. Hi Leanne, I am of an age where I did watch the original Poldark series in the 70's. Looking back it was a bit of a crossroad set at the time although the landscape was stunning. I have to admit Aidan Turner is a bit of a welcome change to Robin Ellis (sorry Robin) and what has been nice is that they have more or less kept to the original stories by Winston Graham. I will of course be sat with my bar of chocolate and glass of wine on Sunday for the last episode of this series and I will occasionally throw D a squint. He tells me that it was because I have red curly hair and reminded him of Angharad Rees that he fell in love with me all those years ago. I think he was definitely squinting back then either that or he was very drunk:-)

    1. What a beautiful place, I loved Cornwall the one time I crossed the Tamar - figuratively speaking, it was Boscastle, and loved it so much.

  15. It's wonderful seeing Bollallack in the spring time, it is such a lovely place. You really must watch Poldark I can see both your resemblances to the Ross and Demelza! Olly's plan for building a house sounds great! Sarah x

  18. Cracking photos my love, crystal clear. Haven't watched Poldark yet, what's the fuss all about eh? ;-) I suspect I have more breton tops, I daren't count them, and I am giggling away at the idea of you and Marc squinting at each other. Xx

  20. You live in such a beautiful place, Leanne. It's high on my list of places to visit. I've been watching Poldark, and have to say that Ross is pretty easy on the eyes. When I was in Chicago this past week visiting my brother we went out to a steakhouse. Our server was a dead ringer for Ross. So much so that when he first came to our table I was certain I knew him. It took me a few minutes to work out why he looked so familiar. I'm not sure what a Breton top is. I'm off to Google it.

  23. Stunning images of paradise ... maybe Olly could build you a house with those views!

  24. Gorgeous photos! I'd love to get down that way sometime *starts plotting*...
We've not jumped on the Poldark train yet either. We're seriously addicted to Twin Peaks; we're only a third of the way through and already I'm anxious about what we'll do when it ends. Maybe try 'Breaking Bad'. Apparently, 'Bad' is very good.
I saw a house on Teen Cribs (shh) with a hidden polished mahogany slide. It looked amazing. I wanted one.
I wish I'd married a builder sometimes. They're very useful.
Have a great weekend in that gorgeous part of the world.
